Yellow Indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans) is a tall bunching sod-former native warm-season grass with green leaves and large plume-like stalk and seed head. It’s showy fall color is yellow, orange and purple. Very attractive plant with gold fall color. Can form dense stands in rich, wet soils and likes wet soil. Component of tall grass prairies and livestock grazing. Very beneficial for wildlife, butterflies and nesting structure for beneficial insects. Used in our Quail Plantation Mix and stands up well in snow and ice.
Generally, Yellow Indiangrass does well in wetter soils, but will do well in upland soils.
